Named by Yu Zuxiang in 1995 after the Gaotai village near the type locality.
In earlier Chinese references on platinum group minerals, the type locality was referred to as the "Gao District", derived from the first syllable of "Gaositai", and later as "Gaotai village". However, the latter however does not appear to exist.
