Ferrera is a municipality in the Viamala Region in the Grisons, Switzerland. It was formed on 1 January 2008 through the merger of Innerferrera and Ausserferrera. Geographically, it covers the entire Val Ferrera valley.
Ferrera Valley is a 10-km-long valley, between Schams and Avers, drained by the Avers Rhine (Averser Rhein or Averserrhein in German, Ragn da Ferrera in Romansh), the major southern affluent of the Hinterrhein (Posterior Rhine).
Some metamorphosed Fe-Mn deposits are located in the valley, which got its name due to its iron ore, mined in the Early Modern period. Iron smelters were erected near the villages of Ausserferrera and Innerfererra, and two roasting furnaces at Alp Sut Fuina. The "Schmelzra" (smelter) at the entrance of the valley, ca. 1.4 km from Ausserferrera, is now a cultural heritage site of the Canton of Graubünden.
