Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost federal state of Germany, covering approximately 15,800 km². It is bordered by Denmark to the north, the German states of Lower Saxony to the south-west and Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania to the south-east, and is flanked by two seas: the North Sea to the west and the Baltic Sea to the east. The state capital is Kiel, while Lübeck, Flensburg, and Neumünster are other major cities. Schleswig-Holstein occupies a strategically important position between Scandinavia and continental Europe.

Geographically, Schleswig-Holstein is characterised by low-relief landscapes shaped largely by Quaternary glaciation. The eastern part of the state consists of gently rolling young moraine landscapes, with numerous lakes, ridges, and depressions formed during the last Ice Age. The western part grades into flat marshlands and tidal flats along the North Sea coast, including parts of the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Baltic coast is more varied, with bays, fjords (locally known as Förden), cliffs, and sandy beaches. The highest point of the state, Bungsberg, rises to only 168 m, reflecting the overall low elevation.

Geologically, Schleswig-Holstein is underlain almost entirely by Cenozoic and Quaternary sediments, with no bedrock exposures at the surface. Beneath the thick glacial tills, sands, gravels, and marine deposits lie Mesozoic and Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks, including salt-bearing Permian (Zechstein) evaporites. These deep evaporite layers have influenced regional structure through salt tectonics, contributing to subsurface domes and deformation that are important for hydrocarbon trapping. The state is part of the broader North German Basin, a major sedimentary basin extending across northern Germany and the southern North Sea.

Schleswig-Holstein has a limited mineral and extractive heritage, focused primarily on industrial materials rather than metallic ores. Resources include sand and gravel from glacial and fluvial deposits, clay for brickmaking, and chalk and limestone in limited quantities, particularly in the eastern parts of the state. Offshore and nearshore areas of the North Sea and Baltic Sea are important for energy resources, including natural gas infrastructure and, more recently, wind energy, though large-scale mineral mining is minimal.

Historically, Schleswig-Holstein has a complex political and cultural background, shaped by its position between German and Danish spheres of influence. The region formed part of the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein, which were contested between Denmark and German states until the Second Schleswig War (1864), after which the area came under Prussian control. Following the 1920 plebiscites, the northern part of Schleswig was returned to Denmark, establishing the modern German–Danish border. This history has left a lasting bilingual and bicultural heritage, particularly in the northern districts.

Administratively, Schleswig-Holstein is divided into districts (Kreise) and independent cities. Although lacking exposed bedrock and major ore deposits, the state is geologically significant for its glacial geomorphology, coastal processes, and subsurface evaporite geology, making it an important region for understanding Ice Age landscapes, salt tectonics, and sedimentary basin evolution in northern Europe.
