The Buller District is one of three comprising the West Coast Region (the other two are Grey and Westland). It is the northern most district out of the three. The district covers 7953.12 square kilometres with a population of around 10 000, 45% of which live in Westport, the district's largest town. The other major town in the district is Reefton. The district is governed by the Buller District Council, with its seat in Westport.

Mining in the district is dominated by gold and coal. Many historic gold, and some coal mines can be found in the Reefton area. Several historic coal mine locations are north of Westport. Very limited, small scale mining continues.

The district is on the upper west coast of the South Island from Karamea in the north to Punakaiki in the south. Inland the border is the junction of State Highway 6 and State Highway 65, west of Murchison. Also lewis Pass on State Highway 7, and a small area consisting of the upper Lewis Valley on the eastern side of the divide to Doubtful River.

Please note the eastern border of the district does not match the West Coast Region border, with the Tasman and Canterbury borders along its entire length. The Lewis Valley is in the Canterbury Region. Also further north, the Buller District encompasses the entire Victoria Conservation Reserve, despite the far east of this being in the Tasman Region. None of this has effected any Mindat locations so far.
