The A1 gold mine is part of the Merrijigs area, a small plateau south of Reefton, bordered to the south by Deep Creek, and north by the modern Globe Progress open pit. The southern edge of the plateau contains the Cumberland, Golden Lead, and A1 gold mines, with the battery sites for the first two bordering Deep Creek. The eastern edge of the plateau contains Willis and Neales claims, and northern side the Sir Francis Drake, and Inkerman gold mines, and Alborn coal mine.
Access is along Soldiers Road which leaves State Highway 7, south of Reefton. Soldiers Road becomes 4 wheel drive after the Alborn walk car park, and winds its way up onto the plateau. Walking trails in the area visit some of the mine sites.
The A1 Mine contained several tunnels on small ore bodies, although there was an exceedingly rich leader on the footwall of a stockwork area. It is not thought much remains at the mine site, which is hidden in thickly forested steep terrain. Little information could be found on the mine.
There was also an A1 dredging operation started in 1899 at Redmans Creek, north of Reefton, but is assumed unrelated to this mine.
