A coal mine owned and operated by a local West Coast family business called Birchfield Coal Mines Limited. The company started with logging operations in the region in the 1950's, then earth moving. The Giles Creek Mine started when they noticed coal being dug up while logging in the area. The mine opened in 1984.
Coal here is found in the Rotokohu Coal Measures, within the Giles Creek Basin. It is sub-bituminous coal, with a low sulphur content, and claimed as one of the cleanest burning coals in New Zealand (ignoring oxymorons).
The open cut mine produces coal used in industry on the South Island. The company highlights its use in the dairy industry. The mine produces around 150 000 tonnes of coal per annum.
