The Venus gold mine was located west of the Ajax/Golden Fleece mine. The site was first prospected in 1875, then worked intermittently for a few years, until 1885, when more gold was found. The Venus Extended Gold Mining Company Ltd was formed, with Thomas H. Lee as manager, and crushing ore at the Energetic Mine battery. For 1886, the mine had the fourth highest production in the Reefton district, achieving 2535 ounces of gold, and paying £6,600 in dividends. However, ore values decreased with depth, and by 1893 the mine was on tribute.

The company drove four adits at the site. The ore body in the upper two adits is 300 to 350 feet long, averaging 2 feet thick. Ore in the lower two adits was less broken, unprofitable, cut off by the Blacks Point Fault. It is thought the ore body was once part of the Royal mine's shoot, displaced west.

In 1893, the company merged with the Inangahua Low Level Tunnel Company, the lease was then taken over shortly after by Consolidated Goldfields of New Zealand Ltd, which did nothing with the lease.
