The manganese deposit exploited by the Cassagna mine was discovered in 1877, along with several other manganese deposits in the Graveglia Valley. Manganese mining in the mines began in 1881 and operations at the Cassagna mine ended in 1998. The underground workings are extensive and there is a more recent large open pit.
