Tørdal is a valley and parish that makes up the northern third of Drangedal Municipality in Telemark county, Norway. Tørdal is centered around the village of Bø where the Tørdal Church is located. Another village in the valley is Bustrak. Historically, the Tørdal area was considered part of Telemark, while the rest of Drangedal was considered part of Grenland.

Sn, Sc, Y, Be, and Li enriched pegmatites. It consists of more than 300 large (>1000 m3) pegmatite bodies covering an area of 12 km × 5 km.

The garnets of the Tørdal pegmatites contain up to 0.2 wt.% Sc, and Sc in garnets reflects the bulk Sc content of the pegmatite host. The amphibolitic host rocks of the Tørdal pegmatites are identified as the source rocks of Sc. Scandium of amphiboles was preferentially released at the onset of partial melting of the amphibolites (Steffenssen et al., 2020).

Premlininary studies (SEM-EDS ; Franx Bernard, see Raade & Kristiansen (2000) revealed that these are scandian or cerian epidotes. Further studies showed that these are complex zonated, showing different chemistry of the epidote – allanite-(Ce) solid-solution series in the diffent zones in one single crystal. Epidote has been found identified from an in an aggregate of allanite-(Ce) from the Heftetjern pegmatite with domains of heflikite (Pieczka et al. 2024, Fig 1 (g).

Description: At Heftetjern Ce–La–enriched epidote-allanite minerals of Epidote supergroups occurs. Some are also enriched in Sc. They appear as well-formed mm-sized plate-like, transparent crystals often forming aggregates, and in varying colours. Premlininary studies revealed that these are scandian or cerian epidotes. Later studies showed these to be chemically zoned with considerable variation in the different zones also in one single crystals. Zonated crystals with 8,3 wt% Sc2O3 has been found. The new mineral heflikite was defined from one such crystal. Since it is visually impossible to distinguish heflikite from the allanites or epidotes found at Heftetjernin the small vugs, the best way of labelling these without any analysis is Epidote Supergroup.
