Prospector Hosteen Nez, a Navajo, discovered uranium near Cameron in Coconino County in 1950. The Kayenta Formation and the Chinle Formation host the mineralization. Production occurred during the period 1950 to 1963, and totaled 1,200,000 pounds (540 metric tons) of U3O8.
