Originally a Spanish colony, mining began as early as 1671 with coquina quarries on Anastasia Island. Florida is comprised of Cenozoic sedimentary rocks and sediments overlying the larger Florida platform.
As Pangea was being rifted apart during the Mesozoic, part of the African Plate detached and was carried along with the North American plate. This fragment of the African plate became the Florida Platform. The platform is nearly double the size of the current peninsula and is fully exposed at times of low sea levels, such as during the Pleistocene. It is comprised of igneous and metamorphic rocks, but they are so deeply buried by the more recent sedimentary rocks that they can only be seen by boreholes and geophysical remote sensing techniques.
Once the submerged Florida Platform came into place, deep beds of carbonate rocks were being deposited by the Middle Jurassic. By the Cenozoic, carbonate rocks and sediment that are found at or near the surface were being deposited, the oldest of which is the Avon Park formation, from the Middle Eocene. Limestone that makes up Florida’s extensive karst topography accumulated from the Late Eocene to the Pleistocene. The first emergent landmass was exposed in the early Oligocene with Orange Island. Siliciclastic unconsolidated sediments (sand) of the Hawthorn Group became widespread throughout West (Panhandle), North, and Central Florida, which are now often found at the surface. Ridges and ancient beach dunes, made up of these sediments are seen inland as hills. Besides these ridges, Florida is extremely flat, the flattest state in the country.
Since Florida’s surface is completely comprised of unaltered sedimentary rocks, it lacks variety in mineral bearing occurrences such as hydrothermal veins. However several important deposits of rocks and minerals are exploited throughout the state. The largest phosphate deposit in the country is found in the southwest near Lakeland. The Central Florida Phosphate District, commonly known as Bone Valley is the largest mining district exploiting this deposit. In addition to the large beds of phosphorite, the district is an extensive paleontological site for vertebrate fossils from the Neogene. There are also smaller phosphate deposits in Citrus County and in North Florida. Limestone mining is found in the southeast and the western peninsula. Clay and silicate sand from the Hawthorn Group are mined in various areas in the state. Fullers Earth, a type of highly absorptive clay, is mined in Gadsden County. Heavy mineral sands are found in the Panhandle and the northern half of the peninsula, but mineable deposits are only found to the northeast in the Trail Ridge (mostly in Clay county).
