The Cross Florida Barge Canal was a canal project to connect the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean across Florida for barge traffic (1963-66). Two sections were built but the project was cancelled, mainly for environmental reasons.

As the canal was dug, it exposed the Inglis formation (mainly composed of broken echinoid shells) and the Avon Park formation, a dolomitized pack stone, which underlies the Inglis Formation.

Interesting calcite/dolomite spherical nodules have been observed with the following features: Many are smooth, some studded with secondary smaller nodules making them look bumpy, some have scalenohedron yellow xls, while others rhombic terminations of impure calcite because of contamination with the dolomite. Rarely clear scalenohedron and opaque Dolomtic rhombic calcites occur on 1 specimen. This only occurs when part of the growing calcite hits a void where it can crystallize freely while the rest continues by simply growing through the dolomite. During intermediate growth stages, the calcite formed concentric rings. But if the permeability of the rock was favorable they would grow together.

Observed calcite is due to acid water leaching down from the Inglis Formation and into the Avon Park Formation
