This locality is the most important mine of the Calamita peninsula. There are no references to exploitations in ancient ages, but mining was surely started by the 18th century. Like other Elba mines, extensive modern exploitation started about 1870-1880. The orebody is magnetite (generally pseudomorphous after hematite) and limonite and is linked to skarns, mainly hedenbergite/ilvaite but also andradite (Macei stope).

The mining area extends from sea level to about 300 m with a width from West to East of 1.7 km. The most significant stopes are the Francesche (later included in Vallone), Vallone, Macei, and Nuova Zona; other stopes are the Albaroccia, Coti Nere, Polveraio, Civetta, Le Piane, and Punta Rossa (see map in site photos).

The mining area is divided horizontally by the road Capoliveri-Calamita-Ripalti at the level 167-176.

In some limited places, there are also copper mineralisations and very little cobalt mineralisation.
