In the vicinity of Špania Dolina (Herrengrund in old German literature) and Staré Hory (Altgebirge), several copper deposits are known. Copper mineralisation occurs in a belt 4 km long and 11.5 km wide of N-S direction between Panským diel hill and Staré Hory village.

Hydrothermal mineralisation of economic importance is developed in crystalline, Permian and lower Triassic rocks. Veins, veinlets and disseminated ores were exploited for more than 1,000 years, but there is also evidence for Stone Age (Neolithic) mining.

Major ore minerals are siderite, tetrahedrite, and chalcopyrite.
