Tuffs, erupted as pyroclastic flows from nearby Monti Sabatini and Alban hills volcanic complex, crop out in numerous places of the city and represent the typical dimension stone used in ancient Rome.
The grey "tufo del Palatino" (also known as "cappellaccio" or "tufo grigio") and the yellow to reddish "tufo lionato", both from the Alban hills volcanic complex, are typical of the central area of Rome (as at the top of the Seven Hills). The so-called "tufo giallo della via Tiberina" (or "tufo di Grotta Oscura") and "tufo rosso a scorie nere" (or "tufo di Fidene"), both from the Sabatini volcanic complex, are found in the north of Rome as far as Prima Porta locality. The tuffs from the central area were used in Rome from the 6th century B.C. while the tuffs from the north of Rome, "tufo giallo della via Tiberina" and "tufo rosso a scorie nere", were used in Rome only from the 4th century B.C., after the conquest of Veii.
The grey "tufo del Palatino" consists of grey volcanic welded ashes very rich in white altered leucite and black crystals. The main mineralogical phases are analcime (as the only zeolite present in this tuff), halloysite, and augite. The so-called "tufo lionato" is lithified crumbly tuff constituted by yellowish-red ashes rich in white and reddish yellow small-sized lapilli and black crystals. The main mineralogical phases are phillipsite, chabazite, and biotite, accompanied by small amounts of augite and leucite. The "tufo giallo della via Tiberina" is a lithified tuff constituted by pink ashes rich in altered small-sized reddish-yellow pumiceous lapilli; the matrix contains a few black crystals. The main mineralogical phases are chabazite, sanidine, and augite. The "tufo rosso di Fidene" has a lithified reddish-yellow matrix, rich in white and yellowish-red small-sized lapilli; the matrix contains a few black crystals. The main mineralogical phases are chabazite, and small amounts of augite and sanidine.
Whewellite is the main component of the alteration crust affecting marble surfaces on Roman monuments (Arch of Constantine, Colosseum, etc.).

Many specimens of presumed ashcroftine-(Y) submitted for analysis resulted to be amorphous or non-crystalline (see http://forum.amiminerals.it/viewtopic.php?t=6071). According to Carlini & Signoretti (2018) the lilac, brown or creamy interlaced acicular crystals or felted masses incorrectly attributed in the past by some collectors to ashcroftine-(Y) are referable to more or less altered terms of the ludwigite-vonsenite series.
