Abandoned quarries located near the tomb of Casal Rotondo in the Capo di Bove lava flow (277±4 ka; Karner et al., 2001), which lies over the "Villa Senni Eruption Unit" ignimbrites and is the effusive product of a vent of the Santa Maria delle Mole extra-caldera system (Tusculano Artemisio-Monte delle Faete period of activity of the Colli Albani Volcano). This lava flow, extending about 10 km from the Tomb of Caecilia Metella to km 17.5 of the New Appian Way, consists of melilite leucitite.
The rock frequently holds small cavities containing calcite, often associated with zeolites, apatite, and vonsenite; moreover calcite is present in the form of veins and is also noticeable under a microscope dispersed in the groundmass, often surrounding leucite and nepheline crystals.
