The arrondissement of Saint-Étienne is located in the Loire department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France.
Saint-Etienne is also the name of the main city.

This town owes its development mainly to coal mining, begun in the Middle Ages and ended in 1973 with the closure of the Couriot shaft and that of the Pigeot shaft in 1983.

Indeed, many coal seams are located under the city, up to 800 meters deep, separated by sandstone layers dated Upper Carboniferous. A total of 500 million tons of coal were extracted in the region of Saint-Etienne, allowing it to be a major industrial city in France.

A School of Mines was established in 1816 and is still active to train engineers while developing scientific research on advanced technologies. One of its most famous students is Jules Garnier, discoverer of garnierite in New Caledonia while he was director of nickel mines in 1864. From 1907 to 1919, the school director was Georges Friedel (he taught there since 1893), a famous French mineralogist and crystallographer who prepared in his laboratory in 1897 a mineral species that bears his name today: Friedel's salt.

Saint-Etienne is also the type-locality of the Stephanian stage with an age between roughly 304 and 299 Ma. It is a subdivision of the Carboniferous system and the regional Silesian (Pennsylvanian) series.
