Abandoned tin-tungsten mines (1937-1986).

According to the local tradition the exploration of the mines began with the extraction of cassiterite during the Roman period.

The Vale das Gatas mines are located in the Trás-os-Montes province, in the district of Vila Real, occupying an area of approximately 8 km2. The exploitation of this mining area began around 1883, and the mining operations were suspended in 1986.

In 1994, the 16 existing mining concessions were extinguished by government legislative decree.

One ore vein (1 meter wide) in two-mica Hercynian granite batholith and schists/greywackes.

Four stages of mineralization:

Stage I - Quartz + hübnerite
Stage II - Cassiterite, arsenopyrite, muscovite (greisenization and muscovitization of schists)
Stage III - Sphalerite, pyrrhotite, stannite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, fluorite, chlorite
Stage IV - Galena and Ag/Pb/Bi-sulfosalts
