The small town of Zeehan is the centre of this old mining district.
It was the third largest town in Tasmania in the 1890's, during the silver rush. The mines were mostly worked for silver and lead, but there were some for zinc, iron, nickel, copper and tin; there were hundreds of mines and prospects, mostly relatively small and were worked for shallow but silver-rich gossans; most are now abandoned.

A visit to the mineral and mining collections in the 'West Coast Pioneers' Museum' is recommended.

Its is also locally famous for a Mineral and Gem show every November, where local prospectors and miners usually bring a few treasures out to show..

There are hundreds of small lead-zinc veins in this district. The lodes are hosted in late Precambrian siliceous sediments of the Oonah Formation. They are of Late Devonian age, thought to be related to the nearby Heemskirk granite.
"The main production of the field came from fissure lodes of lead-silver mineralization. The mineralized fissure veins vary in composition with distance from the granite. Both and Williams (op.cit.) defined four progressive zones:
(i) Cassiterite Zone
(ii) Pyritic Zone
(iii) Sidero-pyritic Zone
(iv) Sideritic Zone
The high sulphosalt ores are generally confined to the sidero-pyritic zone. There is also a marked zoning in the Fe and Mn contents of sphalerite corresponding to temperature gradients of the granite stock."
