Grube Silberberg, Bodenmais, Landkreis Regen, Niederbayern, Bayern, Deutschland
Polymetamorphic iron sulphide deposit, hosted in cordierite-garnet gneiss that is disseminated by quartz veins. First documented mining took place in 1436 and continued intermittently until 1962. It was subsequently converted into a tourist mine.
The Silberberg owes its wealth of ores to the meeting of two types of gneiss from the Moldanubian zone, namely the cordierite-sillimanite-almandine gneisses with biotite-plagioclase gneisses and a borderline of porphyry granite.
Until 1542 the main focus was on silver mining, then vitriol extraction became more and more important. The state and private owners alternated as owners until the mine was finally nationalized in 1772. At the same time, production was changed to potée ("jeweller's rouge", a polishing compound). Precious metal mining finally ended in 1845.
In 1927 the company was converted into a stock corporation. On May 27, 1962, the miners arrived for their last shift. The system of tunnels in the Silberberg is around 20 kilometers long.
