Changsha is the capital of the Chinese Province of Hunan.

Hunan is very rich in minerals and is where the head office of the Hunan Geological survey is located.

The Geological Survey of China employs about 400,000 people and the Hunan Province Geological Survey employs about 40,000 of them.

When the Chinese government decided to let the people work and capitalism flourish in their society a number of people that worked for the Hunan Geological Survey quickly realized that they could sell a few specimens to western mineral dealers and collectors and make many times their yearly salary in the process.

For the first time, they could become, by Chinese standards, wealthy and afford to buy nice homes and even own an automobile.

So Changsha became the centre of the Chinese mineral business, at least the small portion of it that sold specimens to foreigners.

They already knew where all the mines and mineral deposits were and which ones produced the best specimens, so they fanned out all over Hunan and in fact China and gathered up specimens, brought them back to Changsha and sold them to the outside world.

Little by little an internal market is developing for mineral specimens, as we understand them in a western sense, in China.
