A former lode Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag-Au mine located in sec. 31, T2S, R3W, and in sec. 36, T2S, R4W, NMM, 5.1 km (3.2 miles) SE of Magdalena, in the headwaters area of Kelly Gulch, on private land. Discovered and first produced in 1878. Closed to commercial ore mining in 1957. Operation for mineral specimens continues. Owned by Empire Zinc Co. (1939). Owned by the New Jersey Zinc Co. (Empire Zinc Division), 160 Front St., New York, New York (1957). Operated by D. Torres, Magdalena, New Mexico, and C. Barrett, Socorro, New Mexico (1957). MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated.
Mineralization is a deposit hosted in the Kelly Limestone of the Magdalena Group. The ore body is podiform and shoots in form. Controls for ore emplacement included hydrothermal activity wherein mineralized solutions rose along fractures and replaced favorable host rock. Alteration is local and consists of silicified limestone. Associated rocks include monzonite, rhyolite, latite, andesite, and granite. Local rocks include Pennsylvanian rocks, undivided and/or plutonic rocks, and middle Proterozoic rocks.
Local geologic structures include the Kelly-Graphic Fault zone and the Brown Fault, which strike about N20W.
Workings include extensive underground openings comprised of drifts, crosscuts, and stopes. Access included 3 shafts and a tunnel. There are 10 working levels.
The hoist tower at the Kelly Mine was designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. It was manufactured in New Jersey and shipped out as a kit to the Kelly in 1906 and assembled there over the Taylor Shaft. The structure stands 121 feet high. In 2023, the mining history journal had nice references to this hoist shaft and photos.
