Topsham is located about 25 miles NE of Portland, ME.
Granite pegmatites. Brunswick pegmatite field. A large number of quarries and prospects that are permanently water-filled.
The mineralization is a mile-wide belt of granitic pegmatites originally operated as feldspar quarries in a large district.
Numerous world-famous radioactive mineral outcrops cover an area of several square kilometers from Standpipe Hill in the west near the Androscoggin River to the Cathance River in the east.
The uraninite, monazite-(Ce), and ishikawaite minerals are particularly radioactive as they contain varying small amounts of thorium. Most of the pits contain permanent water, but the remaining ones contain vernal water during rainy seasons.
Critical Areas Status:
The USA Critical Mineral Areas program has identified several locations in Topsham as Important Sites Requiring Protection from Development.
