Vote for your favorite mineral in #MinCup26! - Sphalerite vs. Anorthite
Both zinc ore Sphalerite and calcium plagioclase feldspar Anorthite have perfect cleavage that will split cleanly if you hit them with a hammer, but only one can claim a larger split of your votes!

Brunswick pegmatite field. Granite pegmatite.

Critical Area Status:

The Standpipe Hill Quarries proper are inventoried by the USA Critical Mineral Areas program and designated as an Important Site needing protection from development. The reason is that the locality has produced world-record-length bismuthinite crystals (to 45 cm) and is the only habitat in Maine where several mineral species occur. GPS coordinates designate the site of concern. There are several relatively small pegmatites nearby that have produced excellent magnetite crystals or, in others, very fine monazite-(Ce) crystals but do not require protection. The nearby Yedlin Locality is of international significance and needs preservation and access.
