The intrusion in the LPD is dominated by the Caledonian and Late Cretaceous granitic intrusions. The Caledonian granitic intrusions have been partly metamorphosed or deformed during the Late Triassic, also known as Silurian Nanwenhe gneissic granite. Zircon U-Pb, and muscovite 40Ar-39Ar dating indicate that the metamorphic age ranges between 237 and 210 Ma. The lithology of the Caledonian granitic pluton primarily consists of medium to fine-grained porphyritic and gneissic granites, biotite monzonitic gneiss, and fine-grained gneissic granites. This pluton is S-type granite, exhibiting peraluminous characteristics and a composition that ranges from calc-alkaline to high-K calc-alkaline.
Four major metallogenic stages in the LPD, with the fourth stage (the Late Cretaceous W-Sn stage) being further subdivided into three sub-stages. The first stage (445–388 Ma) is a W −Sn −Mn-Ag period, exemplified by the Sanbao Mn-Ag (−Zn-Pb) deposit, the Xinzhai Sn deposit, and the Nanlao W-Cu deposit. The second stage (230–203 Ma) represents a late Triassic W-Sn period, which includes W mineralization in the Nanyangtian deposit and the Sn mineralization in the Xinzhai deposit. The third stage (160–140 Ma) is a Late Jurassic W period, characterized by significant W mineralization in the Nanwenhe (also known as Nanyangtian) deposit. The fourth stage (160–140 Ma) is a late Cretaceous W-Sn-Zn-In period.

The Laojunshan metallogenic district in southeastern Yunnan is situated at the convergent junction of the Cathaysia, Yangtze, and Indochina blocks. As the western extension of the Nanling Sn-W Polymetallic Metallogenic Belt, it is one of the significant Sn-W metallogenic districts in China. Influenced by both the Paleo-Pacific and Tethyan tectonic regimes, this district has undergone prolonged and complex geological evolution.
