Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Saxi W-Be deposit; "Dayakou emerald mine"; "Dayakou emerald deposit";
Skarn-type tungsten (scheelite) deposit.
Reserves: 0.011 Mt WO3.
Emerald-bearing quartz and pegmatite veins, hosted in Cambrian metamorphic rocks at the eastern contact of the Yanshannian Laojunshan granite. The veins were intruded during the Cretaceous.
NOTE (comment by Hans-Jürgen Haas): According to a geologist at Nanjing University there is no "Dayakou Emerald Mine". The correct name is Saxi Scheelite and Emerald Mine, Dayakou Hill, Mengdong Township, Malipo County, Wenshan Prefecture, Yunnan Province. The Saxi Mine is an underground mine, but could also have small old open pits. In his opinion all emeralds are from the Saxi Scheelite and Emerald Mine.
See also the Chinese geological map https://www.mindat.org/photo-1167570.html.
The exposed strata in the W-Be mining district belong to the Paleoproterozoic Mengdong Group, which comprises the Nanyangtian Formation and Saxi Formation. The Saxi Formation, hosting the majority of W-Be mineralization, consists of biotite granulite, two-mica schist, and quartzite, with minor leptynite and plagioclase amphibolite. The ore bodies exhibit stratiform, para-bedded, and vein-type geometries. Stratiform and para-bedded scheelite ores are conformable to bedding within biotite granulite, whereas vein-type mineralization, including feldspar-quartz veins, beryl-quartz veins and tourmaline-quartz veins are parallel to or crosscut the bedding.
