Southern Cross is 371 kilometres east of Perth on the Great Eastern Highway. Generally speaking, it marks the border between the Wheatbelt and the Goldfields region to the east. Gold was first found in the region in 1888 by Thomas Risely who named the area Southern Cross, for the star constellation he was using to navigate back to his camp at night. Most of the streets in the town are named after star constellations. The first mine developed was by experienced prospector Hugh Fraser, and the Fraser Mine open pit can be seen by the highway on the western outskirts of town. Southern Cross served as a way-station for subsequent gold discoveries further east, in particular, Coolgardie in 1892 and Kalgoorlie in 1893. It was also a gold-bearing district in its own right but most of it was reef gold rather than alluvial.

Major gold mines occur in a 70 kilometres north-north-west to south-south-east band from Bullfinch to Marvel Loch. It is not practical to list every gold mine in Western Australia on Mindat due to the sheer number, and lack of geology information on a lot of them. The major gold mines starting from the north are Balladjee Borefield, Radio, Bullfinch, Copperhead, Corinthia, Pilot, Golden Pig, Ruapehu, Maori Lass, Fraser, Polaris South, Transvaal, Cornishman, Leviathan, Axehandle, Archilles, Glendower, Triad, Lenneburg, Treasury, Mary Lena, Marvel Loch, Edward's Find Borefield, Jaccoletti, Panizza, Nevoria, Kurrajong, Banker Lake, Hercules, Edward's Find, Brumby, Bronco, Bronco South, Yilgarn Star, Harris Find, GVG (Burbidge Area), South Star, Tenacious Pig, Vintage Crop, Grand National, Flying Pig. Gold mines to a limited degree also occur to the south of this before it enters the Forrestania nickel belt.
