Several shallow pits from modern operations. It appears to be one of the earlier mining areas surrounding Southern Cross but limited information found. The area is located about 1 kilometre west of the Transvaal Mine in scrub, and approximately 6 kilometres south-west of Southern Cross.
The earliest report found was 1892, but it is possible the area was active from around 1889. In 1893, a mine at this location had the deepest shaft on the Yilgarn Goldfield at 275 feet deep. The reef was 4 to 5 feet wide, and the shaft uncovered several rich pockets producing 138 ounces from 70 tonnes of ore and 128 ounces from 96 tonnes of ore. A battery was on the site from around 1895.
Late 1893, the Blackbourne Gold Mining Company announces a fabulous crushing result to the public. Meanwhile at a shareholding meeting the truth is laid bare. The reef has pinched out, crushing figures are 'unsatisfactory', and the company is voluntarily wound up.
By the time the second source was printed in 1908, the area had been largely abandoned. It states to that point 796 tonnes of ore had been crushed from the area for 226.88 ounces of gold, although records are likely incomplete.
There are three parallel reefs, close together, with one showing a large outcrop of quartz on the surface. They run north north-west and dip east. The reefs were said to have low to poor gold grades.
