The Athenian area can be found about 200 metres north of the Hope's Hill Gold Mine, and extends along the trend of the shear zone to near the small Pilot open cut to the north. At the northern end is Athenian Main, containing three historic shafts, with gold grades obtained ranging from 0.4 g/t to 20.3 g/t from a lode width of up to 5 metres. Ore from the mine is gold and copper, with malachite and azurite noted as species found.
The second group of workings called Athenian West is to the south south-east by about 100 metres of gold sampling between 0.5 g/t to 10.4 g/t, and copper at 4.65%.
A surface excavation called Athenian South, exposing a gold bearing quartz vein, is a further 100 metres to the south, sampling between 0.2 g/t to 9.1 g/t, and some copper.
