An incorporated borough and populated place (town). It is home to the Cornwall Iron Furnace that processed ore from the adjacent iron mines and was active from 1742 to 1883. It is a Catalon-type furnace, charged from the top of the stack with charcoal, iron ore, and limestone for flux. It was built by Peter Grubb, a stone mason turned iron miner, who named the area Cornwall after the famous English mining area his father emigrated from. The red sandstone construction of the furnace facilities is simple and elegant; the extant furnace complex, now a historic park, is the best surviving example of early Pennsylvania ironworks and one of the best in the USA. Originally the blast air was compressed with water power, but a steam engine was added around 1842.

Description: Magnetite was the main constituant or primary ore processed at Cornwall. The mines were in continuous operation, to varying degrees, from 1740, up to the time of it's closing and ranked as the longest continuing mining operation in the US. The mines were finally closed by flood waters created when Hurricane Agnes came through the area in 1972.
