Laverton is the only town of substance in the Laverton Shire. The town was named after Dr. Charles Laver, resident doctor, and financier for local prospectors in the town's early days. The name was chosen by the good people of Laverton, previously called British Flag.

Gold was discovered in the area in 1895. It followed a typical history for goldfields in Western Australia. A rush ensued of alluvial men, then prospectors who sank shafts to prove the reefs. Companies followed investing huge sums from far off gullible investors, only to be wound up in short space of time. Prospectors re-entered the scene mainly to the beginning of World War Two, sending intermittent crushings through the Laverton State Battery (which can still be seen on the northern outskirts of town).

Modern companies rediscovered the area with the late 1960's early 1970's nickel boom and bust, the Windarra Mine near Laverton being a prime example. Gold exploration followed, culminating in the development of open pits though the 1990's by Sons of Gwalia. A large number of pits were mined with ore processed through a central Laverton mill. These pits now exist in an approximately 20 kilometre radius around Laverton.

The deposits are located in the Laverton Tectonic Greenstone Belt, bounded by granitoids of the Laverton Dome to the north-west, Kirgella Dome to the south-east, and Mount Celia and Varden-Burtville Fault Zones trending north north-west.

The central greenstone is acid to intermediate volcanic and sedimentary rocks, including banded iron formation, between two corridors of mafic and ultramafic extrusive and intrusive rocks. The major structural feature is the Laverton Greenstone Shear trending north-south through the centre of the greenstone belt. It is structurally complex with five phases of folding and faulting.

The upper greenstone sequence consists of felsic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks with interbedded basalt near the base. Chert and banded iron formation is abundant.

The lower greenstone sequence is a series of tholeiitic basalts, underlain by komatiite, peridotitic and high Mg basalt lavas in minor turbiditic and conglomerate sediments. Some dolerite and gabbro sills intrude.

West of Laverton is the deposits are dominated by mafic and ultramafic rocks of the lower sequence with mines like Lancefield, Craiggiemore, Mt Morgan, Euro and Jupiter.

The Central area is calc-alkaline felsic to intermediate volcanics and siliciclastics of the upper sequence hosting deposits like Granny Smith, Childe Harold, and the Sunrise Dam mines.

The eastern area contains mafic and ultramafic volcanics of the lower sequence hosting mines like Keringal, Admiral Hill, Burtville and Barnicoat.
