Named by R.W. Birnie and J.M. Hughes in 1979 in honor of Richard Edwin Stoiber (27 January 1911, Cleveland, Ohio, USA - 9 February 2001, Norwich, Vermont, USA), vulcanologist and Professor of Geology, Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, USA. He was an expert on Central American volcanoes, fumarolic gases, and fumarolic mineral incrustations. It is pronounced stoi'·bər·īt.
