The discovery of isoferroplatinum in alluvium of the Durance river originated from the observation of magnetic metal flakes in heavy mineral concentrates obtained during gold panning operations carried out at the sand pits of Rognonas and Peyrolles (Bouches-du-Rhône). Several unknown phases are present : (Pt,Pd)2Cu3, Pt(Cu,Au), (Ni,Pt)Sn, (Cu,Fe)(Pd,Rh,Pt)2S2, (Pt,Pd)4+xCu2As1-x.
Source of Platinum-group minerals : an Alaskan-type intrusion.
