Vas County (Vas vármegye) is an administrative county in western Hungary, covering approximately 3,330 km². It borders Austria to the west, Slovenia to the south-west, and the Hungarian counties of Győr-Moson-Sopron, Veszprém, and Zala to the north, east, and south. The county lies at the transition between the Pannonian Basin and the Eastern Alpine foothills, giving it a more varied relief than much of western Hungary. Major rivers include the Rába, Zala, and Gyöngyös, which have influenced settlement patterns and land use. Szombathely is the county seat and an important historical centre.

Geologically, Vas County occupies a complex boundary zone between the Alpine domain and the Pannonian Basin. Western and north-western parts of the county include foothills of the Eastern Alps, where older Palaeozoic and Mesozoic rocks—including metamorphic units, limestones, and dolomites—are locally exposed or lie at shallow depth. Eastward and southward, these give way to the Neogene sedimentary fill of the Pannonian Basin, consisting of sands, clays, gravels, silts, and loess deposited in fluvial and lacustrine environments. This transition produces a landscape of low hills and plains rather than high mountains.

The mineral and extractive heritage of Vas County reflects this mixed geological setting. Extraction has focused mainly on construction materials, including sand, gravel, and clay from basin sediments, used for building, brickmaking, and ceramics. Quarrying of limestone and dolomite has occurred locally in areas influenced by Alpine geology, supplying building stone and raw materials for lime. While the county has not been a major centre of metallic mining, hydrocarbon resources occur at depth in the western Pannonian Basin, and limited oil and natural gas exploration and production have taken place in the wider region.

Administratively, Vas County is subdivided into districts (járások), with Szombathely as both the administrative and cultural centre. The county has a distinctive regional character shaped by its borderland position, historic trade routes, and combination of Alpine-influenced uplands and Pannonian lowlands. Its geology underpins both its agricultural landscapes and its modest but locally important extractive industries, marking Vas County as a transitional region between the Alps and the Hungarian Plain.
