A former andalusite mine located in sec. 11, T4S, R33E, MDM, 4.5 km (2.8 miles) WSW of White Mountain Peak, along Jeffrey Mine Canyon; 7 miles (ca. 11 km) E of Mocalno; and a considerable distance (about 13.3 km) N of Laws (Inyo County), also N of Bishop. First operated in 1922. Owned by the Champion Sillimanite Corp.

Note: This mine appears on the topo map as the "Jeffrey Mine." Alternate names are as presented in USGS MRDS file Nos. 10031572 & 10212328. The several MRDS database files address this mine by three primary names and present differing geographic coordinates for this locality. The values presented in this Mindat file are derived from the exact location on the topo map with a mine symbol and specific identification of the mine as the "Jeffrey Mine." The ore at the Champion Mine was andalusite which was converted to artificial sillimanite, as that is the commercial product (http://www.mindat.org/mesg-105-322696.html).

Mineralization is a metamorphic andalusite deposit hosted in quartzite. The orebody forms pods. The deposit occurs in a layer 5 feet (1.52 m) to 20 feet (ca. 6 m) thick, about 400 feet (ca. 122 m) long, and 100 feet (ca. 30 m) in vertical dimension, exposed on and attached to a steep, E-facing cliff of quartzite. Associated rocks include Late Cretaceous-Late Permian quartz monzonite. Local rocks include pre-Cenozoic metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks undivided and/or Mesozoic granitic rocks, unit 3 (Sierra Nevada, Death Valley area, Northern Mojave Desert, and Transverse Ranges), and/or Mesozoic volcanic (?) rocks, unit 3 (Mojave Desert, Death Valley area, and Eastern Sierra Nevada).

The Vulcanus No. 8 (claim?) had the largest body of andalusite-bearing rock, 3,500 feet (1.07 km) SW of the Champion (Vulcanite) Mine proper and on the opposite side of a deep canyon (Jeffrey Mine Canyon). It is about 600 feet (ca. 183 m) long and 230 feet (ca. 70 m) wide in the outcrop, with an unknown extended depth. It averages about 40% andalusite at the surface. It was not mined extensively.

This mine yielded a total of about 20,000 tons of hand-cobbed rock containing 53% or more of andalusite. The known minable reserves were depleted in the 1930s.
