A Hg-mining area in the NE corner of Sonoma County, covering a mineralizaed zone about 20 miles long and 2 miles wide. The area trends NW along the border with Lake County.

The principal ore minerals are cinnabar and native mercury. Both are abundant and fill fractures and pore spaces in silica-carbonate rock or, to a minor degree, in chert. The ores were deposited by hydrothermal solutions rising along major shear zones, generally at contacts of serpentine and Franciscan rocks. The Geysers geothermal area is near the middle of the district.
