Named by Stewart Olof Agrell, Michael G. Bown, and Duncan McKie in 1964 in honour of Prof. Robert Andrew Howie (4 June 1923, Olney, Buckinghamshire, England, UK - 10 March 2012, Derby, England, UK), British petrologist and mineralogist of King's College, London University, United Kingdom. Prof. Howie was one of the authors of the Rock-Forming Minerals book series (Deer, Howie and Zussman).
