A road metal quarry located in sec. 6, T20N, R14W (MD), about 5 miles (ca. 8 km) S of Laytonville.

Specimens are commonly labelled as being from "Longvale" or "Longvale Quarry".

Mineralization is in blueschist metasediments of the Franciscan Formation.
A reported mineral occurrence located in sec. 6, T20N, R14W, MDM, 7.1 km (4.4 miles) NNW of Longvale and 5.4 miles S of Laytonville on highway 101, on land of undetermined ownership. NOTE: MRDS database stated accuracy for this locality is 5,000 meters.

Mineralization is associated with Tertiary-Cretaceous Coastal Belt Rocks and/or rocks of the Franciscan Complex, unit 1 (Coast Ranges). Howieite occurs in radiating clusters of bladed, black crystals. Deerite, a black mineral occurs in somewhat felted layers of sub-parallel, needlelike crystals. Zussmanite, a green mineral occurs as tiny tabular crystals or grains disseminated in quartz and stilpnomelane, all in quartz-rich rocks derived by metamorphism of chert.
