Sedimentary-exhalative (SEDEX) lead-zinc-iron deposit with a well-developed oxidation zone. The homogenously positive S isotope composition of sulfides support the suggestion that Xitieshan represents a VMS deposit rather than a SEDEX or carbonate-replacement deposit (e.g., MVT).
The Xitieshan deposit, hosted by the Middle–Late Ordovician Tanjianshan Group of the North Qaidam Tectonic Metallogenic Belt in Northwest China, is a 64 million tonne (Mt) deposit with average grades of 4.86 % Zn, 4.16 % Pb, 58 g/t Ag, and 0.68 g/t Au.
Four different types of orebodies have been identified in the Xitieshan deposit — laminated, stratified, irregular massive, and vein-type (i.e., non-laminated).
The genesis of the Xitieshan deposit has long been controversial. This includes efforts to classify the SEDEX genetic type, VMS type or VSHMS type, displaying transitional features between SEDEX and VMS deposits. From north to south, outcropped strata in the Xitieshan mining area predominantly include the Shaliuhe Group, the Tanjianshan Group, and a small part of the Amunike, Chengqianggou and Ganchaigou Formations. The Shaliuhe Group is a major component of the UHP metamorphic belt, which is primarily composed of eclogite, gneiss, schist and retrograded amphibolite, and which is in fault contact with the Ordovician Tanjianshan group that hosts the massive sulfide orebodies.
Located near Xitieshan, about 75 km SE of Da Qaidam.
The monoclinic 2M polytype of sideronatrite was described from the deposit.
