Köppen climate type:
The ore deposits of the Black Hawk District are examples of a well defined type known as “5 element ores” because they contain Ag, Co, Ni, As and Bi. As is typically the case the Black Hawk ores are fissure vein fillings with the metallic minerals contained in a carbonate gangue, but contain little or no Bi. This type of ore deposit is uncommon but examples are widely scattered, especially in Europe and North America. The best known 5 element ore deposits are those of Cobalt-Gowganda and Port Radium in Canada and Jachymov, Czech Republic.
Some, but not all, examples of 5 element ore deposits have an early carbonate-pitchblende stage. At least some of the veins in the Black Hawk District were uranium bearing. Because of this and because the similar deposits at Port Radium and Jachymov were important at the dawn of the atomic age, the Black Hawk District was investigated in the early 1950's during the uranium rush of that era (Gillerman and Whitebread, 1956) .
