Normandy (Normandie) is a region in north-western France, bordered by the English Channel to the north and the regions of Hauts-de-France, Île-de-France, Centre-Val de Loire, and Brittany. It covers approximately 29,900 km² and is characterised by a varied landscape of coastal cliffs, sandy beaches, broad river valleys, and gently rolling agricultural plateaus. The Seine River flows northwest through the heart of the region to the sea at Le Havre, forming one of France’s most important river corridors. Normandy’s coastline includes iconic features such as the chalk cliffs of Étretat and extensive tidal flats and estuaries.

Geologically, Normandy lies at the junction of several major geological provinces. The western part of the region belongs to the Armorican Massif, composed mainly of Precambrian and Palaeozoic crystalline and metamorphic rocks—granites, schists, and gneisses—formed during the Variscan (Hercynian) orogeny. In contrast, eastern and central Normandy are part of the Paris Basin, underlain by gently dipping Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks, including limestones, marls, sandstones, and especially Cretaceous chalk, which forms the prominent coastal cliffs and fertile inland plateaus. Quaternary deposits are widespread along river valleys and coastal lowlands.

This geological framework has supported a long and varied mineral and extractive heritage. Quarrying has been particularly important, with extensive extraction of limestone, chalk, sandstone, and flint for building stone, lime, cement, and road materials. Norman limestone has been widely used in historic architecture both within the region and elsewhere, including in England after the medieval Norman expansion. Clay deposits supported brick and tile manufacture, while sand and gravel extraction remains important along river systems. Metallic mining has been limited, reflecting the predominance of sedimentary geology.

Administratively, Normandy is divided into five departments: Calvados, Eure, Manche, Orne, and Seine-Maritime, with Rouen serving as the regional capital. Normandy also has a strong historical and cultural identity, shaped by its Viking origins, medieval duchy, and maritime connections across the Channel. Its landscapes, building materials, and settlement patterns reflect the close relationship between geology, river systems, and a long history of agriculture, trade, and coastal interaction.
