An open-pit iron mine active 1964-1983. Economic iron mineralization is in the form of magnetite hosted in an iron oxide apatite (Kiruna type) deposit. The primary mineral assemblage consists primarily of magnetite and actinolite with lesser apatite. The secondary phosphate assemblage consists of minerals formed from iron, phosphorus, etc. that has been remobilized from magnetite, apatite, and other primary minerals.

The Leveäniemi iron ore deposit was discovered in 1897 and is the third-largest discovered iron oxide apatite deposit in Norrbotten after the more famous Kiirunavaara and Malmberget deposits.

The Leveäniemi open-pit mine is 120 metres deep from top to bottom, 1300 metres long and 800 metres wide, and is estimated to contain 110 million tonnes of iron ore, in the form of magnetite and hematite/martite.

In 2010, LKAB planned to reopen the old open-pit mine, which at the time was filled with water. More than 30 million cubic metres of water were pumped away to enable mining, which began on September 25, 2012. On 4 July 2014, the last water was pumped out, and later in the autumn the first test blast was carried out.

Detailed Mineral List:

'Actinolite-Tremolite Series'
'Apatite'
Formula: Ca5(PO4)3A
Description: Xls to 5cm embedded in massive iron ore
'Apophyllite Group'
Formula: AB4[Si8O20]X · 8H2O
Baryte
Formula: BaSO4
Beraunite
Formula: Fe3+6(PO4)4O(OH)4 · 6H2O
Description: XRD-confirmed (deep green to almost black, velvety radiating groups; Augsten, 2009). Beraunite was originally defined as a fully oxidised mineral, but was redefined by Fanfani and Zanazzi (1967), on the basis of a crystal structural analysis, as a mixed-valence iron phosphate and they left the original fully oxidized end-member unnamed. In essence, Fanfani and Zanazzi (1967) had discovered a new mineral species (ferroberaunite) but re-used a previous name. In the 19th century, both beraunite and eleonorite had been applied to the fully oxidized mineral. Eleonorite had been re-applied by the IMA to the oxidized end-member of the beraunite-eleonorite series. In the IMA 21-D redefinition the name beraunite was reapplied to the oxidised phase and the name ferroberaunite was created for the mixed-valence phase (Tvrdy et al., 2021).

Diopside
Formula: CaMgSi2O6
Dufrénite ?
Formula: Ca0.5Fe2+Fe3+5(PO4)4(OH)6 · 2H2O
Description: Mentionerd in the litterature, but the identification is unsure. Might be a component in the "laubmannite (of Moore) ?
Epidote
Formula: (CaCa)(AlAlFe3+)O[Si2O7][SiO4](OH)
Ferroberaunite
Formula: Fe2+Fe3+5(PO4)4(OH)5 · 6H2O
Description: Beraunite was originally defined as a fully oxidised mineral, but was redefined by Fanfani and Zanazzi (1967), on the basis of a crystal structural analysis, as a mixed-valence iron phosphate and they left the original fully oxidized end-member unnamed. In essence, Fanfani and Zanazzi (1967) had discovered a new mineral species (ferroberaunite) but re-used a previous name.
