The Marble Ark (a name created by author Ted Themelis to describe this famous gem mining area) is situated NW of Mogok township, starting at the low foothill of kadot-tat (west of Yebu) and ending up at the Dan-dangu-taung village.
The area consists of a series of continuous and discontinuous marble bands, spanning about 12 km and formed during the folding-tilting-and-uplifting geological process that took place in the region millions of years ago. In certain types of marble, ruby, spinel, sphene, diopside and other gems are found, some of them of the finest quality. Gem mining takes place in the hard rock, using loo-dwin, gwè-dwin and letkya-dwin mining methods in a vertical mode and also at an angle, depending on the morphology and configuration of these marbles. Gems are also found in the alluvium dispersed all over the general area in small pockets and in the caves, these gems are mined using mostly the lebin mining method.
