Île-de-France is the administrative region in north-central France that surrounds and includes the city of Paris, forming the country’s political, economic, and cultural core. Covering approximately 12,000 km², it is the smallest region in metropolitan France by area but the most densely populated. The region is characterised by low-relief plateaus, broad river valleys, and extensive urban development. Major rivers include the Seine, Marne, Oise, and Essonne, whose confluences have strongly influenced the growth of Paris and surrounding settlements.
Geologically, Île-de-France lies entirely within the Paris Basin, a large and relatively stable sedimentary basin composed of gently dipping Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks. These include alternating layers of limestone, marl, clay, sand, and gypsum deposited in marine, lagoonal, and continental environments. The region is particularly well known for its Lutetian limestones of Eocene age, which have been extensively quarried and form the building stone of many of Paris’s historic monuments. Quaternary alluvial deposits line the river valleys and provide fertile soils as well as sources of sand and gravel.
This sedimentary geology underpins a significant extractive heritage, closely linked to the development of Paris. Quarrying of limestone and gypsum was historically widespread, supplying building stone, plaster (plâtre de Paris), and lime for construction. Underground quarry networks beneath Paris and its suburbs are a distinctive feature of the region’s industrial past. Sand, gravel, and clay extraction has also been important, particularly along the Seine and Marne valleys, and continues today to support construction and infrastructure.
Administratively, Île-de-France is divided into eight departments: Paris, Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne, Seine-et-Marne, Yvelines, Essonne, and Val-d’Oise.
