The region incorporates the far southern section of the North Island. It includes New Zealand's capital Wellington, and towns further north like Porirua, Fetherston, Greytown, Masterton, Martinborough, Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt.

The area contains two major north north-east trending mountain ranges, being the Rimutaka and Tararua Ranges, then to the east the Aorangi Mountains and eastern uplands bordering the east coast. Between is the Wairarapa-Masterton Basin, containing Lake Wairarapa.

The basement rock across the region is the Torlesse Composite Terrane, largely greywacke, with some chert and pillow lava. The Torlesse Terrane is sub-divided into the late Triassic to early Jurassic Rakaia Terrane to the west, and late Jurassic to early Cretaceous Pakau Terrane to the east. Further east is younger Cretaceous sandstone and mudstone. Between the two terranes is the 20 kilometre wide Esk Head Belt, a melange of broken and deformed rocks.

Many north-north-east trending fault lines traverse the landscape, the largest being the Wellington and Wairarapa faults. The largest earthquake in the region in recorded history is the 8.2 Wairarapa Earthquake on 23 January 1855. New Zealand has been subjected to many earthquakes, some in recent history, and there is the potential for another large earthquake in the Wellington region at any time.

Apart from a couple of aggregate quarries near Wellington, mining is scarce in the region. Historically some minor gold mining occurred in the late 19th Century to the west of Wellington, but little gold was recovered. The section includes half a dozen fossicking sites, more designed for family fun, than containing anything valuable.
