An alluvial gold rush occurred here in July 1869, and soon several public companies were formed to try and find any quartz lodes. Bakers Hill and Morning Star were two of the more substantial of the five companies who tried to develop mines here. None found a great deal of gold, and the area was taken over in 1873 as a water source for Wellington.

Since 1995 the area has been developed as a wildlife sanctuary. The Morning Star drive can be viewed as part of the entry into the sanctuary, and is marked with an interpretive sign. The tunnel only travels into the hill a few metres, containing rail tracks, wetas and glow worms.

The Morning Star Company was formed in June 1871, pegging a lease of 10 acres. A 60 foot shaft was sunk, and four head stamp battery purchased. By April 1872, a 110 foot long weir, 240 foot long flume to the water wheel, and 100 foot long tail race has been constructed.

In 1873, the land was taken over as a water source for Wellington, and by 1878 the lower weir had flooded much of the site.
