Most elements of this historic mine are now covered by water in the lower weir in the valley. The dam was constructed in 1873, and both the Bakers Hill and Morning Star mines were under water by 1878. The Golden Crown Mine closed also when the land was taken over by the government as a water source for Wellington, while the Try Again and Union leases closed when the dams prevented access. Mindat only lists separately a couple of these sites that something meaningful can be written about. None yielded much in gold, public companies for mining forming between 1869 to 1871, and all closing by 1873.
The first company to form was the Bakers Hill Mining Company on 09 July 1869, pegging a lease of 20 acres. The company excavated three tunnels high on the hill, however no gold was uncovered. It then dug a fourth tunnel, 8 feet above the stream where some gold was located. This had reached 440 feet by the end of 1871, with a further second tunnel driven further up the hill. A two stamp battery and waterwheel was erected, connected to a weir further upstream by a 200 foot flume.
None of the upper tunnels for this mine are available for public access by the Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary, which now controls the area.
