Ngahape is a remote area about 50-60 kilometres by road south-east of Masterton. Three kilometres east of this town on the Masterton-Castle Point Road, turn south onto the Masterton-Stronvar Road. This winds its way south-east through farming back blocks, requiring a good map to negotiate several intersections. The latter part of the road becomes gravel, and gradually deteriorates as it enters the Ngaumu Forest, ending abruptly at a non descript spot that once held a school. In recent years the local forestry company has blocked access to various roads in the area.

Most sources focus on igneous rocks, and district wide rock units. (Moore, 1980) provides useful brief geology summary for the district in his introduction. The sequence base to top is sandstone, conglomerate, minor sandstone of the Glenburn Formation, thin bedded sandstone and mudstone of the Te Mai Formation, siltstone of the Whangai Formation, black siltstone of the Waipawa Formation, and glauconitic sandstone of the Huatokitoki Formation. This sequence is faulted against Cretaceous sandstone and siltstone of the Pahaoa Formation to the west, and overlain by Miocene sediments to the east. Shallow dolerite and basalt intrusions of the Ngahape Volcanic Complex are found in the upper parts of the sequence. The major Motuwaireka Formation trends north north-east, with other faults in the area called Adam, Pukeroro, and Kaumingi.

Analcime was confirmed in the area but only in petrology thin slices, as part of the Red Hill/Volcano Road Quarry location.
