Group of Mines
Köppen climate type:
The Ethiudna Mines, are a small group of (mainly copper) mines, which although originally listed as separate leases, were ultimately combined into one lease. They included ‘The Main Shaft’, ‘Central’, ‘Pipers’, ‘East’ and an officially un-named ‘Wollastonite deposit’. The original S.A. Geological Survey mapping work conducted in the 1950s misidentified the abundant wollastonite in the calc-silicate rocks as tremolite.
As the mines are in such close proximity, and cover only a small area (57000 square metres), many fossickers may not even realise when they have moved from one lease to the next. For this reason we are listing this group of mines under the title ‘Ethiudna Mines’, and listing each mine separately as a sub-locality. This way, specimens can still be posted, even if the exact lease is unknown by the collector. Obviously if the correct lease is known, please list your photos under the correct site.
Although not listed as such, it may be possible for any, or all minerals listed here to be found at any of 'Ethiudna Mines'
Note: A small Cobalt bearing locality to the east of this group, ‘Ethiudna East Cobalt Mine’, is distinctly different from this locality. The cobalt-rich species are almost entirely restricted to this site, and only trace amounts are generally found in the ‘The Ethiudna Mines’, however, microprobe analysis of pyrite at the latter locality has yielded up to 7% Co in solid solution, together with minor arsenic.
The co-ordinates give here are for the 'Ethiudna Main Shaft'
