About HochleitneriteHide

Formula:
Mn2Ti3(PO4)4O2(H2O)2 · 14H2O
Colour:
pale yellow
Specific Gravity:
2.40 (Calculated)
Crystal System:
Orthorhombic
Name:
after Rupert Hochleitner (1954- ), mineralogist specializing in systematic mineralogy, and famous for authorship of mineral-collecting / identification guidebooks. Also known as a long time editor-in-chief of the journal LAPIS ( https://www.strongnations.com/gs/show.php?gs=3&gsd=9045 )
Isostructural with benyacarite and pleysteinite. Seems to be the Ti analogue of benyacarite and TiO-analogue of pleysteinite.

Note: type locality set to the main-category locality due to some misfits between the IMA-NMNC Newsletter's data ("64 to 76 m level") and the Mindat sublocality ("67 m level").

Structure details:

* corner-sharing linear trimers comprising Ti-centred octahedra
* 10-member rings, || (010), arise from corner-sharing between the trimers and the phosphate groups;
* the phosphate tetrahedra also share cornerns, along [010], with MnO2(H2O)4 octahedra;
* K+ and water located within the rings.

Mineral SymbolsHide

As of 2021 there are now IMA–CNMNC approved mineral symbols (abbreviations) for each mineral species, useful for tables and diagrams.

Physical Properties of HochleitneriteHide

Colour:
Pale yellow
Density:
2.40 g/cm3 (Calculated)

Optical Data of HochleitneriteHide

Type:
Biaxial (+)
RI values:
nα = 1.615(2) nβ = 1.621(2) nγ = 1.645(2)
2V:
Calculated: 53.8°
Max. Birefringence:
δ = 0.030
Based on recorded range of RI values above.

Interference Colours:
The colours simulate birefringence patterns seen in thin section under crossed polars. They do not take into account mineral colouration or opacity.

Michel-Levy Bar The default colours simulate the birefringence range for a 30 µm thin-section thickness. Adjust the slider to simulate a different thickness.

Grain Simulation You can rotate the grain simulation to show how this range might look as you rotated a sample under crossed polars. Each grain retains its interference colour (retardation) while its brightness falls to black at extinction and reaches a maximum between extinction positions.

Surface Relief:
Moderate
Pleochroism:
Non-pleochroic
Comments:
2V could not be measured because of the presence of apparent sector zoning, which distorts the conoscopic figure and makes extinction observations unreliable.
